The honest limits of sanding-free renovation

When is parquet sanding necessary?

Renovation without sanding is suitable when the existing protection is sound and only worn at the surface — not when it has worn through to damaged wood.

4main warning signs
0hidden deep damage
100 %condition-based decision

Deep scratches, grey or black wood, finish delamination, raised edges, deep stains and uneven previous sanding may require mechanical treatment or at least localised repair.

Process

From diagnosis to the correct LOBA layer.

01

Scratch through the lacquer

If your fingernail catches on the edge and the wood is visible, a maintenance layer cannot restore material that has been lost.

02

Grey or black wood

Discolouration beneath the protective finish may indicate water, wear or a chemical reaction within the wood.

03

Delaminating coating

A new layer cannot stabilise an old finish that is peeling or has poor adhesion.

04

Damage to the floor structure

Raised edges, deep dents or open joints must be repaired before new surface protection can be applied.

STOP

When should this route not be used?

The cheapest treatment is the wrong choice if it merely hides signs of structural or moisture damage for a short time.

Next treatment

If surface care is not enough.

All questions →
Does every matt patch mean the floor needs sanding?

No. The area may simply be dirty or its protective coating may be worn. A cleaning test and viewing the floor towards the light help distinguish surface-film wear from wood damage.

Can only the affected area be sanded?

A local transition is often easier on oiled surfaces; on lacquered floors, a difference in colour and gloss may remain visible. The correct decision depends on the system.

Does 2K Contact fill deep scratches?

No. It is an adhesion primer that bonds a new topcoat to a suitable factory UV finish; it is not a filler for damaged wood.

The surface type, depth of damage and previous care determine whether the correct route is cleaning, a maintenance layer, oil, 2K Contact or sanding.
